For mid-market B2B brands running NetSuite, two platforms dominate the storefront decision: SuiteCommerce Advanced and BigCommerce. Both can support complex B2B operations. Both connect to NetSuite. They take fundamentally different architectural approaches to the problem, and the right choice depends on specifics that generic platform comparisons do not address.
Tavano Team builds on both. This comparison is based on what we have seen work in practice across client implementations, not on platform marketing claims.
SuiteCommerce Advanced runs inside NetSuite. Your product catalog, pricing, customer records, inventory, and orders all live in NetSuite. The SCA storefront surfaces that data directly — no sync, no connector, no intermediate layer.
BigCommerce is a separate platform that connects to NetSuite via integration. BigCommerce manages your storefront data. NetSuite manages your ERP data. A connector keeps them in sync. This is a powerful setup, but it introduces a layer of complexity that does not exist with SCA.
Everything else in this comparison flows from that difference.
SCA advantage: A logged-in B2B customer on an SCA storefront sees their actual NetSuite data in the moment: their real-time inventory availability, their exact price level from their NetSuite customer record, their open invoices, their order history. No sync lag. No stale data.
BigCommerce trade-off: A BigCommerce store shows the data from the last successful sync with NetSuite. A well-built connector between NetSuite and BigCommerce typically syncs on a 15-minute batch interval, since NetSuite cannot run scheduled processes more frequently than that. Behind that interval is usually a scheduled job (often a Map/Reduce script) pulling and pushing data in batches rather than reacting to changes as they happen. For most scenarios, this is a minor issue.
For clients who need truly real-time data, that gap can be closed. NetSuite user events can push changes to BigCommerce the instant they happen, and BigCommerce webhooks can push changes back to NetSuite just as fast. But this is not something to build by default. For most accounts, the 15-minute batch sync is more than enough, and going fully event-driven adds complexity that is not worth it unless the use case demands it: customer credit availability, live ATP (available to promise), or pricing that changes frequently enough that a 15-minute lag actually causes problems.
Both platforms handle the core B2B requirements. The difference is in depth and in how much custom development reaching that depth requires.
| Feature | SuiteCommerce Advanced | BigCommerce B2B Edition |
| Customer-specific pricing | Native (from NetSuite price levels) | Native (price lists, requires sync setup) |
| Purchase order workflow | Native | Native |
| RFQ / quoting | Native | Native |
| Invoice payment | Native | Native (with connector) |
| Customer portal | Strong native features | Good, with some custom work |
| Account hierarchy management | NetSuite-native, surfaced in SCA | Requires custom configuration |
| Catalog restrictions | Strong, rules-driven in NetSuite | Possible, more setup required |
| Real-time inventory | Real-time (no sync) | 15-min intervals (sync-dependent) |
For deep B2B complexity — multi-tier account hierarchies, highly customized portal experiences, complex pricing rules — SCA is the stronger native platform because the B2B logic lives in NetSuite and surfaces on the storefront without a translation layer.
For B2B requirements that are well-served by BigCommerce B2B Edition’s feature set, BigCommerce is competitive and offers a more modern storefront development experience.
SuiteCommerce Advanced: Requires SuiteScript 2.x development for customization beyond theme changes. Finding skilled SCA developers is harder and the talent pool is smaller than for BigCommerce. Ongoing maintenance includes managing SCA version updates twice per year and keeping customizations compatible with each release.
BigCommerce: A larger developer ecosystem, a more familiar technology stack (React, Stencil framework), and a broader pool of designers and developers who know the platform. For customizations that stay within the platform’s native capabilities, development is generally faster to execute and ongoing maintenance is simpler than SCA.
That advantage holds as long as the customization does not go beyond what BigCommerce handles natively. Heavier customizations typically require a middleware layer between BigCommerce and NetSuite. Building that middleware is not particularly difficult, but it is not free either: it requires solid BigCommerce platform knowledge, plus deploying and maintaining a server to keep that middleware connected and running.
If your team needs to move quickly, iterate often, or your eCommerce operation requires regular front-end changes within BigCommerce’s native feature set, BigCommerce has a development velocity advantage. If your customization needs are heavy enough to require middleware, that velocity advantage narrows, since you are now maintaining an additional piece of infrastructure alongside the platform itself.
Both platforms involve: platform license, development and design, and ongoing support.
SCA’s platform cost is included in your NetSuite subscription (the SCA module fee). You are not paying a separate eCommerce platform license. But the development cost is typically higher because SCA expertise is more specialized.
BigCommerce has a platform license cost (Enterprise tier is required for B2B Edition) plus the NetSuite connector maintenance cost. Development costs can be lower due to the larger talent pool, but the integration layer adds ongoing maintenance work.
Neither platform is obviously cheaper than the other. Total cost over three years is a more useful comparison than upfront license cost.
