Choosing between Klaviyo and Mailchimp is one of the most common email platform decisions for eCommerce merchants. Both are widely used, both handle the basics well, and both offer free entry points. But they are built for fundamentally different use cases.
Mailchimp was founded in 2001 and built its dominance as a general-purpose email marketing tool for small businesses across all industries. Klaviyo was founded in 2012 and built from the ground up specifically for eCommerce revenue attribution and lifecycle marketing. That origin difference shapes everything about how each platform works.
Mailchimp holds approximately 60% of the email marketing market share by customer count, making it the most widely used email platform in the world. That reach has made it a default starting point for many businesses because of its familiarity and ease of use.
Strengths:
Ease of use. Mailchimp’s interface is designed for non-specialists. New users can launch a professional-looking email campaign within hours using guided templates and a drag-and-drop builder that requires no technical knowledge. This is a genuine advantage for small businesses and teams without dedicated email marketing expertise.
Wide integration ecosystem. Mailchimp offers over 250 integrations across eCommerce platforms, CRMs, and marketing tools. Note: Mailchimp does not have a native Shopify integration, a significant limitation for Shopify merchants. Klaviyo and other platforms fill this gap more effectively.
Accessible pricing at low contact counts. Mailchimp’s free plan supports up to 500 contacts. At lower contact counts, Mailchimp’s paid plans are less expensive than Klaviyo’s.
Segmentation and automation basics. Mailchimp supports list-based segmentation, behavioral targeting, and automation workflows for welcome emails, abandoned cart (on paid plans), and date-based triggers.
The limitation most eCommerce merchants hit as they grow: Mailchimp organizes marketing around audience lists rather than unified customer profiles. This makes it difficult to build cross-channel, event-driven flows based on a complete view of customer behavior, purchase history, and predicted lifetime value. For merchants whose email program is a meaningful revenue channel, this architectural limitation becomes the ceiling.
Klaviyo has grown to serve over 140,000 customers globally and has become the dominant email platform for mid-market and enterprise eCommerce. Its architecture is designed around a unified customer data platform (CDP) that centralizes behavioral events, purchase history, and predictive analytics into a single customer profile.
Strengths:
Klaviyo-powered brands consistently attribute 20 to 35 percent of total GMV to email marketing, compared to the 15 to 20 percent industry average for general-purpose email platforms. The platform’s revenue attribution model connects specific email sends directly to transactions, giving marketers a clear view of what is working.
Ecommerce-native automation. Klaviyo’s flow triggers are built around commerce events: viewed product, started checkout, placed order, fulfilled order, price drop, back in stock. These are not add-ons to a general-purpose automation tool; they are native first-class triggers. Browse abandonment flows, predictive replenishment sequences, and VIP customer journeys all require this kind of event-level data, which Klaviyo provides out of the box.
Advanced segmentation. Klaviyo segments update in real time based on behavioral data and predictive scores, including predicted next order date, customer lifetime value tier, churn risk, and engagement scoring. These segmentation capabilities enable precision targeting that general-purpose tools cannot match.
Omnichannel reach. Klaviyo supports email, SMS, mobile push, RCS, and WhatsApp from a single platform. Mailchimp primarily supports email and SMS, with no native mobile push, RCS, or WhatsApp capability. For eCommerce brands building multi-channel customer journeys, Klaviyo’s channel breadth is a structural advantage.
AI features. Klaviyo has invested heavily in AI capabilities: predictive analytics for next order date and lifetime value, AI-generated subject lines and copy, send-time optimization, and product recommendation personalization. In 2025, Klaviyo also launched AI Agents for marketing orchestration. Mailchimp offers some AI features for content generation, but its AI capabilities do not have access to the same depth of commerce data that Klaviyo’s AI works with.
Klaviyo updated its pricing model in February 2025 to bill based on “active profiles” (contacts who have been sent an email in the past 90 days) rather than total list size. This can reduce effective billing for merchants with large lists but inconsistent send frequency. At 10,000 contacts, Klaviyo’s email plan costs approximately $175/month versus Mailchimp Standard at approximately $100/month. Klaviyo’s revenue advantage typically justifies this premium for merchants above 2,500 active contacts.
For a startup or small business whose email program is primarily newsletters and occasional promotions, Mailchimp’s ease of use and lower initial cost are genuine advantages. There is no reason to pay for capabilities you are not ready to use.
For any eCommerce merchant above $500K in annual revenue who wants email to be a meaningful, measurable revenue driver, Klaviyo is the better choice. The platform’s eCommerce-native data model, behavioral automation depth, and revenue attribution capabilities produce materially better outcomes than Mailchimp for merchants willing to invest in the learning curve.
A common pattern Tavano Team observes: merchants start on Mailchimp because it is free or cheap, grow their store to $500K to $1M in revenue, realize their abandoned cart and browse abandonment automations are limited by Mailchimp’s architecture, then spend two to three months migrating to Klaviyo and wishing they had done it earlier. If you are building toward meaningful email revenue, starting on Klaviyo is the better long-term decision even if the early cost difference feels unnecessary.
Tavano Team now offers a Mailchimp NetSuite integration in addition to our Klaviyo NetSuite connector. Merchants who need Mailchimp for organizational or contractual reasons can still connect it to NetSuite for automated data sync. That said, for merchants choosing a platform without existing constraints, our recommendation is Klaviyo for its eCommerce depth.
